From postwar Berlin to Mallorca, Paris and the United States, Peter Keil built an unmistakable international voice—direct, vivid and instinctive.
His encounters with Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and the avant-garde shaped a life devoted entirely to art. Today, Keil is still creating, still searching and still painting.

From war to West Berlin
From when I was very little, I always had the arts on my mind. My father, a blacksmith, was an artist. Being a blacksmith was a hard job, but you also had to be very artistic. I was born in 1942, right during the Second World War. As you can imagine, my life didn’t seem too pretty. After the death of my father, my mom, also a very artistic lady, made her way to West Berlin during the war, in order to offer us a better life.
Right there, with all the grayness throughout that time, I discovered my interest in paintings, particularly the expressionist artists such as Pablo Picasso. My mentor, Otto Nagel, was also a very famous painter. He was the one who taught me my first techniques. I couldn’t believe my luck when I was accepted at the University of Arts in Berlin. However, during that time, the Berlin Wall was built, and I lost contact with my mentor, Otto Nagel. That’s when I made the decision that I needed to discover other places. I also started to spend more time abroad. Away from dull Berlin.
Artists of a generation
Nevertheless, this time gave me great contacts. At the university, I became friends with Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schoenebeck, and Joachim Schmettau, to name a few. All of them were influential artists of their generation.
After that time, I discovered the beauty of Spain, and went to Mallorca. This is where I met Joan Miró. Miró was a great mentor of mine. His studio was extraordinary, and his techniques still influence me today. This was also the time when I realized that my art is my life, my hobby, my future, and my everything. Hence, I started to establish studios in Paris, London, Berlin, and in the U.S.
Picasso, Miró and Dalí
Having met Picasso in Paris and Miró in Spain, and being able to work with those two extraordinary artists, has inspired my whole entire life. Picasso, in his ability to simply explain to me how to use his techniques; Miró, to use expressionism and naturalism and connect both to paint all these amazing artworks. Salvador Dalí, for his precise craftsmanship, has also influenced me greatly.
I wouldn’t be the artist I am now if I had not met them. All three artists—Picasso, Dalí, and Miró—gave me knowledge, techniques and mentorship one can only imagine: the precise craftsmanship, the striking and bizarre images, and their imagination. Thank you Picasso, Dalí, and Miró for having you as mentors. I am now the last one of our group, but I will continue till my last breath. This is my world, and I will indulge as much as I can into my creativity to give the world a more colorful expressionistic view.
Bavaria and Florida
I have to be honest, most of the time nowadays, I work out of my studio from Bavaria or Florida. Bavaria is quite cold in the winter. Even though the scenery is beautiful and gives me a great portion of creativity, my old bones prefer the heat. Hence, I spend time with my family in Florida.
I am thankful for having this flexibility and taking advantage of having time to spend with my grandkids in Florida, and with the rest of my family in Bavaria.
